Lee’s Summit, MO
Lee’s Summit, MO – The History
William Howard, a native of Kentucky who had acquired 833 acres in Jackson County, platted a 70-acre town on part of his land in 1865. He named his new town Strother, which was his wife’s maiden name. Howard and his family spent most of the Civil War in Kentucky; he had been arrested in 1862 for “being a Confederate” but was paroled. Howard gave several plots to the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The town’s first railroad station was a boxcar donated by the railroad.
There are two legends explaining why the town was renamed to Lee’s Summit. One legend holds that it was renamed to honor Robert E. Lee, but most historians believe that the intent was to honor Dr. Pleasant J.G. Lea, an early settler who was killed in 1862 by guerrilla fighters from Kansas. The altered spelling has been blamed on the railroad; the time schedule printed by the railroad, the name painted on one side of the boxcar used as a station and a sign beside the tracks all used the alternate spelling. Because the misspelled name had already become widely circulated, the town incorporated as Lee’s Summit in 1868.
Lee’s Summit became an important center for the surrounding agricultural area. By 1880, the town had five physicians, five churches, four attorneys, 25 businesses and almost 700 residents.
In 1912, a prominent lumberman from Kansas City named R. A. Long bought approximately 1,700 acres in the southwest part of the town. His dream was to build a showplace farm, and he was able to turn his dream into a reality. He constructed Longview Farm, a highly self-sufficient farm that included 42 buildings, five barn groups, a church and a mansion. Longview Farm became known internationally for its horses and other livestock. Today, the mansion and church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Paving in Lee’s Summit, MO
All Pro Asphalt offers an assortment of paving services to both residential and commercial customers in Lee’s Summit.
Asphalt Paving Lee’s Summit, MO: Installing asphalt pavement is economical and fast, but with proper maintenance, the new pavement can last for decades. Asphalt overlays can deliver the appearance and performance of new pavement at a lower cost. Overlays are applied directly on top of an existing concrete or asphalt pavement that has a stable base.
Asphalt Crack Repair Lee’s Summit, MO: Neglected cracks are a common cause of an asphalt pavement’s premature failure. Open cracks allow water to erode the base, and when water trapped beneath the pavement freezes, the expanding ice will inflict additional damage on both the base and the pavement.
Asphalt Sealcoating Lee’s Summit, MO: Sealcoating is an effective and economical way to protect asphalt pavement while simultaneously improving its appearance. Sealcoating screens out the UV rays that can accelerate the deterioration of asphalt pavement, restores the pavement’s color and helps protect against the damage caused by automotive fluids.
Parking Lot Striping Lee’s Summit, MO: Parking lot striping improves safety for pedestrians and drivers alike, enhances the property’s aesthetic appeal and is a crucial part of making a parking lot ADA-compliant.
Asphalt Repair and Infrared Asphalt Restoration Lee’s Summit, MO: The category of asphalt repair typically includes the removal and replacement of areas that have developed alligator cracking, potholes or other serious issues. Infrared asphalt restoration is an economical way to make repairs that are often virtually invisible.
Concrete Lee’s Summit, MO: Sidewalks, ramps and dumpster pads are good candidates for concrete pavement. Long-lasting, attractive concrete, however, needs professional installation. It may require periodic repairs, especially if there are tripping hazards caused by frames that have been uplifted by tree roots or the normal freeze/thaw cycle.
